What is Soil Investigation?

Soil investigation is a critical process to understand the physical and mechanical properties of soil at a construction or development site. It helps determine whether the ground is suitable to support structures like buildings, roads, or embankments.

In Malaysia, soil investigation is essential due to the country’s varied geology, soft ground areas, and frequent rainfall. The data collected guides safe design, foundation type, and construction methods while helping to prevent ground failure or unexpected settlement.

At Geotechnica, we provide comprehensive soil investigation services including borehole drilling, standard penetration tests (SPT), lab testing, and geotechnical reporting—ensuring our clients get reliable ground data for safe, cost-effective development.

FAQ

Soil Investigation FAQ

What is soil investigation?

Soil investigation is the process of studying ground conditions before construction to ensure safety and stability.

Malaysia’s soft soils, rainfall, and mixed geology make soil studies essential for safe foundation design.

It includes borehole drilling, in-situ tests (like SPT), lab testing, and geotechnical reporting.

A borehole test drills into the ground to collect soil samples and measure depth to rock or water.

SPT is a field test to measure soil strength by driving a split spoon sampler into the ground.

Typical depths range from 3 to 30 meters, depending on the building load and soil type.

A standard soil study may take 2–5 days on-site, plus several days for lab work and reporting.

It’s not recommended. Without soil data, there’s a risk of settlement, cracks, or failure.

It includes soil layers, test results, groundwater info, and foundation design recommendations.

We offer accurate, reliable soil studies using certified methods and expert geotechnical engineers.
